Pain is real. And so is healing.

This is an article about pain and healing. Written by Gena Bean,
Boston-area Stress Reduction Consultant.

There's a reason why we repress, suppress, distract, tune out, and ignore our true feelings.
There's pain in there.

The pain is real. And feeling it sucks. This is real life.
And because it's real life, and because I'm a real yoga teacher, I can't tell you that there's an easy way to make your suffering just go away. There isn't. Every human being will experience some form of suffering throughout their lives.

There is not an easy way to make it go away. But there are tools that bring health. There are tools that increase your ability to be okay, and even enjoy life- even with that pain inside.

Yes, you feel pain. Yes, it can be debilitating, overwhelming, unbearable.
But you are not alone in feeling these things.
Humans have always felt pain. It is very likely that in the last hundred thousand years, someone somewhere has felt a very similar form of suffering to what you feel right now.

People have been finding ways to address their pain for... well, forever. In every long standing tradition for inner connection, there are traditional tools to address relief from suffering. "Mindfulness" is a relatively new name for a very old tool. Mindfulness comes from Eastern traditions of self knowledge.

In mindfulness, one pays attention to real life as it unfolds, through the pain and suffering as well as the joy and bliss. In this way, humans have been able to increase their ability to live fully. Living fully includes being able to experience both the downs and the ups of real life with inner strength, with equanimity.

If you would like detailed instruction on the exploration of mindfulness tools- find a class, find a teacher. If you are in Boston, you are welcome to my classes. My class schedule is listed on my homepage.

Weekly meditation or yoga classes are an easy way to start introducing yourself to new concepts. The eight week program in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction is a deep immersion that can jump start your new, healthier, relationship to your suffering.
