The Basics

The intention for this 'basics' page is to give you an idea of what mindfulness means so that you can better decide if a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) class would be beneficial as you navigate the stress in your own life.

"What is mindfulness?"
In MBSR class, there is a focus on developing a specific type of awareness that refrains from conditioned forms of stress reaction. Explicit instructions are given for encountering mind-racing with benevolence. The originator of the MBSR format, Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, has written that "Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way, on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgementally."

"Why is there so much interest in Mindfulness these days?"
Medical research on MBSR has been showing effective results since its beginnings at the UMass Medical School's Pain Clinic in 1979. This research is expanding our understanding of how the human brain can better relate to stress, pain and other discomfort.
In a 2011 study, MRI brain scans showed that the physical structure of the brain was changed in research subjects who participated in the nine sessions of the MBSR program. These fascinating results have spurred more research and wider media coverage. Including a recent article in the New York Times business section.

"How do I sign up?"
